Workshops

Marsja Mudde Muziek offers special workshops on medieval and renaissance music. There are usually several workshops in the agenda for singers who are interested in this repertoire. If there is sufficient interest, these workshops can be given on other days in consultation, or, for example, especially for your ensemble or choir. Marsja not only gives workshops for people who already sing, but also for schools, museums and companies. Sometimes singing or music history comes first, sometimes other themes. On request, Marsja also develops tailor-made workshops for all kinds of target groups.

Workshops for singing enthusiasts from lower-intermediate level:

These workshops focus on getting acquainted with the repertoire and with early notation. Every participant is helped at her or his own level to be able to sing the repertoire. More advanced singers are challenged further individually. As a group we work on the interpretation. If there is sufficient interest, the group can be split by level.

Workshops for advanced singers and (pre-)professionals:

In these workshops participants are expected to have enough experience to take on the challenge of reading entirely from the original notation. The repertoire is worked on both individually and in small groups. The workshop closes with a public presentation.

• On the way to Santiago da Compostella: Medieval Pilgrim Songs from mainly Spanish music manuscripts. On request, bookable from 2 participants.
• Hildegard von Bingen: multi-day in-depth study of the songs of Hildegard von Bingen from the Dendermonde Codex and the Riesencodex. On request, bookable from 5 participants.
• Mastering Modal Methods and Manners for Modal Music: on request, bookable from 4 participants.

Online workshops:

These study days are live via Zoom and follow a different format from the meetings in Engelen: shorter sessions, in English, with a small number of active participants alongside seats for auditors.

• Hildegard Study Days Online via the International Chant Academy: autumn series from 14 October to 18 November 2026, in Track A (from manuscript to voice) and Track B (interpretation). Single sessions or the complete series.

• Hero or antihero? A workshop around the troubadour song ‘Ja nuns hons pris’ by the twelfth-century king of England, Richard the Lionheart, covering themes such as connection, leading and following, balance and learning by doing.

Workshops for primary schools:

These workshops connect music to other primary school subjects. Prices and other conditions depend on the length of the workshop and on other arrangements.

• Medieval music and notation: we discover the development of methods for passing on music and of music notation, in relation to the developments in the history of the musical styles themselves (from group 3 onwards).
• A medieval Christmas: looking together at the imagery around Christmas in the Middle Ages and experiencing how it is woven into the texts and melodies of medieval Christmas songs; about the relationship between imagination and music (from group 3 onwards).
• The kerelslied: writing a new text for a very old Dutch song; about the relationship between language and music in the Middle Ages and today (from group 6 onwards).
• The singer’s kitchen: a look behind the scenes at Marsja Mudde Muziek; about the relationship between music and other school subjects, such as language, arithmetic, history, philosophy, science and technology, physical education and meaning in life (from group 3 onwards).

Workshops for secondary schools:

The workshops described are suitable for a double period or half a day. The prices and other conditions depend on the lesson length and other arrangements.

• The kerelslied: writing a new text for a very old Dutch song; about the analysis of language and music and the relationship between them (for all years and levels; also suitable alongside poetry teaching).
• A tour of Europe: an introduction to different medieval musical styles across Europe and their accompanying notations and performance practice (aimed at senior students taking music as an elective).
